Instruments
beware "violin-shaped objects"
It may look like a violin (viola, cello, or bass) and it probably seems like a great deal! However, these "instruments" are often extremely difficult to play and are unable to produce a good tone even when played by a professional. This can create a lot of frustration for the student: they can follow all the directions perfectly, but the thing still doesn't work the way it should! Finding a quality instrument from a reputable vendor solves this before it becomes a problem. I recommend music shops that:
specialize in bowed-string instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass),
allow you to play the instrument before rental or purchase, and
have a repair-person (called a luthier) on staff. You will then also have a place to take the instrument for regular maintenance and any needed repairs.
